Industry Partners Update - October 2023
Welcome to the latest edition of g:termly!
It's hard to believe that summer is already a distant memory as we wrap up our first half term at Global Academy. We've had a blast, and there's so much to share with you.
At Global Academy, we've had an eventful and highly productive first half-term, brimming with exciting projects and activities! These initiatives exemplify the diverse and exceptional opportunities available to our students in conjunction with our industry partners.
This half term we have also launched a plethora of brand new courses for our Sixth Form routes including Esports Production, Journalism, and Technical and Broadcast – it has been a busy one! Thank you for your ongoing support to kickstart careers in media!
Year 12 Content Production Goes Behind the Scenes at Global HQOur Year 12 students had a unique opportunity to visit our Global HQ, gaining first-hand knowledge of the inner workings of the industry. We got to spend time seeing some of the UKs most loved radio stations, here from station production teams, and meet Global Academy alumni who are now working at Global. |
Exploring the World of Journalism: Year 12's Trip to The GuardianOur Year 12 students had a unique opportunity to step into the world of journalism by visiting The Guardian's headquarters. This eye-opening experience provided them with valuable insights into the industry and the chance to interact with professionals in the field as well as getting a go at making their own front page spreads! |
Learning About Apprenticeships with Amazon and Apprentice NationStudents had a memorable start of term event at one of Amazon's UK fulfillment centers, celebrating the tenth anniversary of Amazon's apprenticeship program. The event combined education, entertainment, and career exploration, offering Year 12 students valuable experiences and featuring a performance by music artist - Cat Burns. |
Year 13 Media Business Students collaborate with Wavemaker UKOur Year 13 Media Business students joined forces with Wavemaker for the Media Essentials programme. This collaboration allowed them to apply their classroom knowledge to real-world scenarios and gain a deeper understanding of media business operations alongside partners like Channel 4, Global, TikTok and Amazon. | Check out our press coverage about this in Campaign magazine and LBB. |
Global Academy Students Make Some Noise for CharityOur students took part in charity initiatives, using their skills and creativity to support the annual Global Make Some Noise Day. Their efforts reflect our commitment to social responsibility and the positive impact that our students can make in the community. From Teacher Lip Sync Battles, charity radio shows, wet sponge throwing at teachers, and work experience - we did it all! |
Celebrating Black History MonthGlobal Academy celebrated Black History Month in style this October - with activities such as 'Young, Gifted and Black' in conjunction with Wunderman Thompson creative agency, our Roots to Routes panel featuring the voices of Hayley Mulenda, Remel London, Angie Greaves, Danielle Blenman, Cherrelle Skeete and Savanah Graham plus our Afrovisibility and the Windrush Project with Year 11s culminating in a grand final screening event at Everyman Cinema. We were also joined by Global Academy alumni – DJ Dynamic, from Capital XTRA who hosted our annual Black Pride party which our Technical Students produced and live-streamed via YouTube. These events highlighted our commitment to diversity and inclusion, fostering an environment where all voices are heard. |
Inspiring the Next Generation: Candice Brathwaite's VisitWe were honored to host best selling author and presenter Candice Brathwaite who shared her insights and inspired our students to aim for greatness. Such interactions with industry leaders are pivotal in shaping the aspirations of our students. |
Three Globallers Nominated for Student of the Year in RISE AwardsWe're excited to announce that two of our students and one of our alumni have been nominated for the Student of the Year category in the RISE Awards. This recognition underscores the exceptional talent and dedication of our students. GOOD LUCK to Jess, Esme, and Rochelle for the announcement next month! |
Global Academy Students Shine at the Radio FestivalOur students had a remarkable day of learning and networking at the Radio Festival, where they had the chance to engage with industry professionals, expand their knowledge, and gain insights into the evolving world of radio. |
